The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt ALL the questions.
1.
a) Explain Phenomenon of Capillarity. Obtain the expression for capillary rise of liquid. [7]
b) Fig. below shows a conical vessel having its outlet A to which a U-tube manometer is connected. The reading of the manometers given in the fig. shows when the vessel is empty. Find the reading of the manometers when the vessel is completely filled with water. [8]

2.
a) Define continuity equation and derive it by using polar coordinate. [8]
b) Derive an expression for determination of hydraulic coefficient of orifice. [7]
3.
a) Define Pitot tube? Derive an expression for free discharge through triangular notch considering approach velocity? [8]
Calculate:-
i. Total pressure on one side of the tank.
ii. The position of centre of pressure for one side of tank, which is 2 m wide.
4.
a) A 45 degree reducing bend is connected in a pipe line, the diameter at the inlet and outlet of the bend being 600 mm and 400 mm respectively. Find the force exerted by water on the bend if the intensity of pressure at inlet to bend is 8.829 N/cm² and the rate of flow of water is 600 lit/sec. [8]
b) Find the expression for the force exerted by the jet on stationary inclined plate. [7]
5.
a) A composite block is made to float in two liquid, first in water with 5cm height projecting above the water surface then in glycerine (relative density=1.35) projecting 7cm above the surface of glycerine. Make calculation for the height of block and its relative density. [8]
b) Water flows at 75lps in a tapping pipe whose diameters at section 1-1 and 2-2 are 300mm and 150mm respectively which are at heights 5m and 3m above datum. If pressure at section 1-1 is 450 kPa, find the pressure at 2-2. Neglect loss of energy. [7]
6.
a) An open circular vessel is 1m in diameter and 2m in height. It contains water filled to a depth of 1.5m. If the cylinder rotates about it's vertical axis, (a) what constant angular velocity can be obtained without spilling, (b) what is the pressure intensity at the center and at the corner of the bottom if 𝜔=6 radians/seconds. [8]
b) For the velocity profile given below, compute the displacement thickness and momentum thickness:
Compute Displacement and Momentum Thickness |
7. Write short notes on: (Any Two) [2x5]
a) Buckingham 𝜋 method of dimensional analysis
b) Pressure diagram
c) Pascal Law
