William Edgar Stafford was an American poet and pacifist, and the father of poet and essayist Kim Stafford. William Stafford was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on January 17, 1914. He received a BA and an MA from the University of Kansas at Lawrence and, in 1954, a PhD from the University of Iowa. During the Second World War, Stafford was a conscientious objector and worked in the civilian public service camps—an experience he recorded in the prose memoir Down My Heart (1947). He married Dorothy Hope Frantz in 1944; they had four children.

In 1948 Stafford moved to Oregon to teach at Lewis and Clark College. Though he traveled and read his work widely, he taught at Lewis and Clark until his retirement in 1980. His first major collection of poems, Traveling Through the Dark, was published when Stafford was forty-eight. It won the National Book Award in 1963. He went on to publish more than sixty-five volumes of poetry and prose. Among his many honors and awards were a Shelley Memorial Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Western States Lifetime Achievement Award in Poetry. In 1970, he was the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a position currently known as the Poet Laureate).

Among his best-known books are The Rescued Year (1966), Stories That Could Be True: New and Collected Poems (1977), Writing the Australian Crawl: Views on the Writer’s Vocation (1978), and An Oregon Message (1987). William Stafford died at his home in Lake Oswego, Oregon, on August 28, 1993.

एक रातको अँध्यारो यात्रा गरिरहेको बेलामा मैले एउटा हरिण विल्सन नदीका छेउको सडकको किनारामा मृतावस्थामा पल्टिएको देखेँ। यस्ता मरेका हरिणहरुलाई खोल्सा वा गल्छीतिर लडाइदिनु हुन्छ किनकि सडकको त्यो ठाउँ साँगुरो छ र गाडीलाई अर्को दिशातिर अचानक मोडेर लैजाँदा अझ बढी हरिण र अरु जङ्गली जनावरहरुको मृत्यु हुन् सक्छ।

गाडीका पछाडिका बत्तिको हल्का उज्यालोमा म गोडाले छाम छुम गर्दै गएँ र एक थुप्रोको छेउमा उभिएँ। त्यहाँ एउटी मृगिणी थिई हालसालै मारिएकी। ऊ पूर्णतया अररो भई सकेकी, झन्डै झन्डै चिसो भई सकेकी थिई। मैले उसलाई एकातिर घिस्याएँ ( उनको भुँडी ठूलो थियो )। उसका भुँडी एक छेउलाई स्पर्श गरिरहेका मेरा औँलाहरुले मलाई हरिणको वास्तविक अवस्थाको सही जानकारी दिए - हरिणका भुँडीका त्यो भाग तातो थियो; उसको गर्भमा जीवित, अचल बच्चा प्रतिक्षा गरेर बसिरहेको थियो तर कहिल्यै नजन्मिने गरी। त्यस पहाडी सडकमा म अलमल्ल परें।

कारले आफ्ना पार्क गर्दा बाल्ने होंचा बत्तीहरु अगाडिपट्टि लक्षित गरेको थियो र ढक्कन मुन्तिरको स्थिर इन्जिन निरन्तररुपले ध्वार-ध्वार आवाज गर्दै मानौं कुन कुराप्रति आनन्द व्यक्त गरिरहेको थियो। बत्तीले रातो पारेको पेट्रोलको तातो धुँवामा म उभिईराखेँ। हाम्रा समुह ( साथीहरु ) का वरिपरि निर्जन अनकन्टारले केही कुरा सुनिरहेको म सुन्न सक्दथेँ।
